Chianti Classico UGA names

  • UGA: An additional geographical unit within Chianti Classico. Its name may be used only on eligible Gran Selezione made from grapes originating in that unit; it is not a separate DOCG or a ranked Grand Cru.
  • Eleven designated areas: Castellina, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Gaiole, Greve, Lamole, Montefioralle, Panzano, Radda, San Casciano, San Donato in Poggio and Vagliagli.

UGA • conditions and transitions

  • Delayed use: Article 7 delays Lamole, Montefioralle and Vagliagli until the end of the third year after the amendment enters into force.
  • Historical choice: Eligible estates that used Greve or Castelnuovo Berardenga during the preceding three-year period may permanently retain that exclusive name, subject to notification to the Consorzio and certifier.
  • Label placement: The UGA follows Gran Selezione in the same visual field as mandatory information; its lettering cannot exceed Chianti Classico and Gran Selezione.
