Essential references

Fèlsina

Tuscany

  • “Rancia”, the name of an old farm: Since 1983, “Rancia” has expressed Sangiovese from a vineyard in Castelnuovo Berardenga. Its name recalls an old agricultural estate linked to a Benedictine monastery; the cuvée carries Chianti Classico Riserva.
  • Three generations to plant Colonia: Domenico Poggiali and his son Giuseppe initially abandoned work at Colonia because its soil was so difficult to prepare. Giovanni resumed the project, and the three generations finally saw the vineyard planted in 1993: its wine is now a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione.
  • Two Sangioveses with character: With no vintage specified, “Rancia” combines flowers, small fruits and spice with sustained acidity; “Colonia” stands out for its concentration, pronounced tannins and need for ageing. The “Berardenga” Chianti Classico, meanwhile, offers forest fruits, spice and noticeable tannins.
  • The sweet passage of time in Vin Santo: The Vin Santo grapes dry before seven years of maturation in caratelli, small traditional casks. With no vintage specified, dried fruit, peach and apricot accompany its broad sweetness, balanced by acidity.

Historic estates and founders

Ricasoli

Tuscany · Chianti Classico · Gaiole

  • The baron’s letter: In 1872, Bettino Ricasoli wrote to Professor Cesare Studiati about his trials at Brolio: Sangiovese at the centre, Canaiolo as a complement and white Malvasia for wines to drink young. This letter sheds light on Chianti’s history; white grapes are now excluded from Chianti Classico.
  • Brolio continues its research: “Castello di Brolio” 2022 is pure Sangiovese from separately vinified estate plots. This Gran Selezione bearing the Gaiole designation is Ricasoli’s flagship wine.
  • A broad, structured wine: “Castello di Brolio” 2022 evokes ripe fruit, flowers, tobacco and cedar. The palate shows breadth and a pronounced structure.
Essential references

Fontodi

Tuscany · Chianti Classico · Panzano

  • Sangiovese as the sole signature: In 1981, the Manetti family and winemaker Franco Bernabei created “Flaccianello della Pieve” with Sangiovese alone. Now under Colli Toscana Centrale IGT, this flagship cuvée brings together selected grapes from several Fontodi vineyards.
  • “Vigna del Sorbo”, a single origin: The other signature, “Vigna del Sorbo”, comes from the vineyard of the same name and carries Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG. Sangiovese is also the sole grape here, but the wine has its own single-vineyard origin.
  • The power of “Vigna del Sorbo”: The 2020 combines blackberry, plum and smoky nuances. A powerful structure, firm tannins and clear acidity give this cuvée a firm framework.
Pioneers and renewal

Istine - Angela Fronti

Tuscany

  • The day the Frontis put their name to their wine: After selling their grapes, the Frontis bottled their first 3,000 Chianti Classico bottles with the 2009 harvest. Since 2012, the Radda and Gaiole vineyards have also been vinified separately: each place can now find its own expression.
  • A lively, floral Chianti Classico: The 2022 Chianti Classico offers small red berries, vanilla and balsamic nuances. The floral palate remains lively and supple.
