Between hills and sea

  • Place: South of Adelaide in Fleurieu zone, the region lies between Gulf St Vincent and the Mount Lofty Ranges. Cooling sea influence and hillside exposure modify a warm, dry growing season.
  • Shiraz and Cabernet: Shiraz often gives ripe dark fruit and substantial texture. Cabernet adds another structured red expression, while picking date, extraction and oak decide how rich the finished wine feels.
  • Grenache and alternatives: Grenache may emphasise fragrant red fruit and supple texture. Mediterranean varieties such as Fiano broaden the picture; no GI rule fixes a single blend or grape recipe.

Compare with Langhorne Creek

  • Shared zone, different settings: Langhorne Creek is a separate Fleurieu region, farther east by Lake Alexandrina. Its alluvial flats and lake breezes differ from McLaren Vale’s hills and Gulf influence.
  • A useful red comparison: Try a McLaren Vale Grenache beside a Langhorne Creek Cabernet–Shiraz to compare perfume, tannin and weight. These are grape-and-place examples, not a rule that each region makes only one style.

At the table

  • Choose texture: Fragrant Grenache can suit roast poultry and Mediterranean vegetables. Fuller Shiraz or Cabernet needs richer food; check alcohol and serve below warm room temperature.
  • Named wine: d’Arenberg The Dead Arm is a Shiraz reference from McLaren Vale. A wine name identifies the producer’s selection; it is not a registered subregion.
