Essential references

Henschke

Eden Valley

  • The « grandfathers » of Hill of Grace: The heart of « Hill of Grace » comes from vines planted around 1860, nicknamed the « Grandfathers », which Cyril Henschke began vinifying separately in 1958 with younger vines from the same site. The name translates that of Gnadenberg church, facing the Eden Valley vineyard.
  • Mount Edelstone, the older of the two wines: « Mount Edelstone » comes from another Eden Valley vineyard, planted to shiraz by Ronald Angas in 1912. Cyril Henschke began bottling it separately in 1952, six years before « Hill of Grace »: two wines for discovering two places in the same region.
  • Two fragrant, textured shiraz wines: In 2022, « Hill of Grace » combines blackberry, blueberry, violet and five-spice, with delicate freshness and velvety tannins. « Mount Edelstone » offers black cherry, plum, sage and bay leaf; its concentrated palate retains supple tannins and a long finish.

Rockford

Barossa Valley

  • Saving the flavour of old vines: In the 1980s, overproduction led to the uprooting of old Barossa vines. Rockford was among the independent wineries that renewed demand for their grapes; « Basket Press Shiraz » retains this attachment to growers and their heritage.
  • The red Robert dreamed of: Robert O’Callaghan wanted to recreate the supple, earthy Australian reds he enjoyed in the 1960s. « Basket Press Shiraz » continues this taste with old equipment and two years of ageing in previously used barrels.
  • A supple, earthy shiraz: « Basket Press Shiraz » 2016: a generous, supple expression, with deep colour and an earthy character. The estate intends it to develop slowly in bottle.
Essential references

Torbreck

Barossa Valley

  • A Scottish name for Barossa: « RunRig » recalls a Scottish system of scattered land worked collectively by clans. Torbreck adopts this image for its blend of six Barossa Valley vineyards.
  • A touch of white in the red: « RunRig » 2022 contains 98% shiraz and 2% viognier. This small share of a white variety is added to heighten the red’s fragrance.
  • Powerful, fragrant and structured: « RunRig » 2022: plum, black cherry, dried rose, cocoa and star anise. A dense, firm and powerful red whose breadth is accompanied by a long tannic structure; a bottle intended for ageing.

Yalumba

Barossa Valley

  • The Signature 2022, cabernet and shiraz together: The Signature 2022 blends 51% cabernet sauvignon with 49% shiraz from Barossa Valley vineyards. Yalumba seeks cabernet’s structure and fragrance alongside shiraz’s breadth, giving the ageworthy red complementary roles within one blend.
  • Eighteen months, with a minority of new oak: The wine matures for eighteen months, with 21% new Hungarian hogsheads and French barriques and the balance in older French and Hungarian oak. Red and dark fruit, blackcurrant, black cherry, liquorice, cedar and mint meet a generous, concentrated palate carried by aromatic freshness and fine tannins.
  • A different signatory for each vintage: Since 1962, The Signature has honoured someone who shaped Yalumba. The 2022 carries Paul Midolo’s signature after twenty-nine years at the house, adding a personal history to this cabernet-shiraz partnership.
