Place & landscape

  • Three parts: Distinguish Krems and its rocky valley, the eastern loess country, and villages south of the Danube around Göttweig Abbey.
  • Grape anchors: Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are the DAC’s two varieties. Vineyard and producer decisions matter more than a simple one-soil/one-grape rule.

Read the appellation

  • Categories: Dry Grüner Veltliner or Riesling; regional, named-village and Ried indications, plus Reserve. The legal 15% blending tolerance applies.
  • Labelled alcohol: From vintage 2023: regional ≥11.5%, village ≥12%, Ried ≥12.5%, Reserve ≥13%.
  • Timing: Examination submission starts 1 January after harvest for regional/village wines, 1 March for Ried and 1 July for Reserve. These are submission dates, not an automatic minimum barrel-ageing period.

At the table

  • Grüner Veltliner: Pour with Wiener schnitzel and potato salad: the fresh finish lifts the crisp coating, while its savoury spice keeps the pairing lively.
  • Service: Fresh dry whites: 9–11°C; textured whites: 11–13°C.
