Place & landscape

  • Location: Vineyards around the eastern side of Lake Neusiedl include the Seewinkel. Gols and Illmitz help orient two different wine traditions.
  • Two contrasting styles: Dry Zweigelt reds and concentrated sweet whites are distinct reference styles. Noble rot is a form of Botrytis that, under favourable conditions, allows grapes to lose water and concentrate their juice.

Read the appellation

  • Dry reds: Neusiedlersee DAC and DAC Reserve reds are Zweigelt with the legal blending tolerance, maximum 4 g/L sugar, and minimum labelled alcohol of 12%/13% respectively.
  • Sweet whites: All authorised white quality-wine grapes may be used. DAC sweet covers Spätlese and Auslese; DAC Reserve noble sweet covers Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese. Both require at least 45 g/L residual sugar.
  • Seewinkel: The narrower Seewinkel indication is permitted for the sweet categories when grapes come from Apetlon, Illmitz and/or Podersdorf.

At the table

  • Zweigelt: Offer with roast pork or veal schnitzel as a supple, fruit-led red.
  • Botrytised sweet white: Pour with blue cheese or an apricot tart for a sweet-and-savoury contrast.
  • Service: Supple reds: 14–16°C. Sweet wines: 8–10°C, served in a small wine glass.
