Follow the lakes south

  • Orientation: The valley runs north–south in BC’s interior, through the Kelowna and Penticton areas towards Oliver and Osoyoos near the US border.
  • A continental setting: Warm, dry summer days contrast with cooler nights and cold winters. Lake influence, altitude and aspect make the pattern more complicated than latitude alone.

Grapes make the contrast tangible

  • Northern and higher sites: Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir provide useful starting points for fresh whites, finer-framed reds and sparkling wines.
  • Central valley: Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Merlot overlap across lake-influenced sites; there is no sharp grape boundary.
  • Southern warmth: Around Oliver and Osoyoos, warmer sites give more room to Merlot, the Cabernets and Syrah. Ripeness and tannin can be more prominent while acidity still matters.

Two bottles, two styles

  • Riesling from Kelowna: Tantalus Old Vines Riesling 2023 combines retained sugar with pronounced acidity. It is a still table wine; Riesling and sweetness do not automatically mean Icewine.
  • A southern red blend: Mission Hill Oculus 2021 uses Merlot and the Cabernets from southern sites. The cellar is in West Kelowna, but its address is not the complete vineyard origin story.
  • Vintage scope: These are specific bottle examples. Winter damage and replacement-grape releases make checking the exact vintage and label especially useful.

At the table

  • Riesling: A dry northern-valley Riesling suits trout with lemon. An off-dry version can accompany gently spiced pork or ginger-led dishes, with the wine’s sweetness balancing the preparation.
  • Southern reds: Merlot or Cabernet blends from warmer southern sites suit lamb, beef or mushroom-rich dishes. Choose a richer sauce for a firmer, more tannic bottle.
  • Service: Serve Riesling cool, around 9–11°C, and structured reds around 16–18°C. Judge aeration by the wine’s tannin and development.
