Find the vineyards

  • The southern lakes: Begin with Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, far south of much of Canada. Water stores and releases heat, helping nearby vineyards through the seasonal transitions.
  • Three principal areas: Niagara Peninsula lies south of Lake Ontario. Prince Edward County is farther east, at the lake’s eastern end. Lake Erie North Shore occupies southwestern Ontario.

What changes between them

  • Niagara: The widest range: aromatic Riesling, still and sparkling Chardonnay/Pinot Noir, structured Cabernet Franc and Icewine. Compare lakeshore plains with the Escarpment benches.
  • Prince Edward County: A cooler setting makes freshness, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and sparkling wine useful starting points. Winter protection remains a practical vineyard concern.
  • Lake Erie North Shore: A long, relatively warm growing season offers scope for riper Cabernets and Merlot alongside whites. The site and year still matter.

Put VQA Ontario in context

  • Provincial origin: VQA Ontario is itself an origin statement. It can cover grapes from more than one Ontario region, or from an emerging area outside the three principal appellations.
  • Style is a separate choice: The broad origin does not dictate one grape, sweetness or oak treatment. Hybrid-based table wines also use the Ontario indication under the provincial rules.
