More than one warm valley

  • Location: Colchagua lies south of Cachapoal, within Rapel. Inland hillsides and alluvial ground differ from western sectors more exposed to Pacific air.
  • Apalta: Near Santa Cruz, Apalta combines slopes with lower ground beside the Tinguiririca. Carménère, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot make a useful red-blend reference; a slope is not the same soil setting as the valley floor.

Ripe reds, different sources

  • Style: Many reds are generous, dark-fruited and structured, sometimes with herbal or spicy detail. The blend, harvest and oak regime decide how powerful or supple the bottle feels.
  • Apalta versus wider Colchagua: A wine from Apalta and a blend combining Apalta with Marchigüe answer different origin questions. Cool western sectors also broaden the region beyond its famous rich-red profile.

At the table

  • Cabernet Sauvignon: Pair with roast lamb and rosemary or steak with a savoury jus; the meat and sauce support a structured red.
  • Service: Structured reds: 16–18°C; decant mature sedimented bottles gently just before service.
