Liebfraumilch: grape and label requirements

  • Grapes and style: At least 70% comes from Riesling, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau or Kerner; the wine must fall within the legally defined lieblich sweetness range.
  • Label distinction: A grape name or an origin smaller than the Anbaugebiet may not be stated on this wine. Do not read Liebfraumilch as the name of one Worms vineyard.

Districts and additional vineyard references

  • Other Roter Hang sites: Connect Nackenheim with Rothenberg and Nierstein with Hipping.
  • Westhofen: Kirchspiel is another key inland Riesling site, complementing Morstein.
  • Flörsheim-Dalsheim: Hubacker is the broader vineyard name; Oberer Hubacker is the more specific classified origin encountered on leading dry Riesling labels.
  • Keep the scales separate: Bingen, Nierstein and Wonnegau are Rheinhessen’s three Bereiche. Roter Hang is a local landscape, while Hipping or Morstein identifies a vineyard.
