Keller — Klaus Peter et Julia Keller

Rheinhessen / Wonnegau / Westhofen - Kirchspiel

  • Kirchspiel as a separate expression: Westhofen’s Kirchspiel forms an amphitheatre open to the east and south-east on clay-limestone soils. Keller bottles its dry ‘Westhofen Kirchspiel Riesling GG’ separately from the estate’s other great Rieslings, placing vineyard identity at the centre of the range.
  • The 2024 wine: Westhofen Kirchspiel Riesling GG 2024 combines apricot, peach and mirabelle plum with a fresh, taut, dry palate and a long finish.
  • A family attention to place: Three generations of the Keller family live together, sharing the ambition to find each vineyard’s character in the wine. Klaus-Peter cites Charles Rousseau and Romain Lignier among his models, linking that attention to place with his Burgundian influences.
Essential references

Wittmann

Rheinhessen

  • Every plot has its cask: At Wittmann, each cask receives the harvest from a single plot. The family, certified organic since 1990 and biodynamic since 2004, thus preserves the differences between Westhofen’s sites before composing its wines.
  • Morstein, dense and fresh: ‘Morstein Riesling trocken Grosses Gewächs’ 2024 expresses this Westhofen vineyard in a dry Riesling at 12% abv. The selected tasting profile combines complex texture, concentration and citrus and herbal freshness.
Historic estates and founders

Gunderloch

Rheinhessen / Roter Hang / Nackenheim - Rothenberg

  • Rothenberg at the centre of the estate: The banker Carl Gunderloch founded the estate around Nackenheim’s Rothenberg in 1890. Six generations later, Johannes Hasselbach still treats this as the family’s home vineyard. He describes Rothenberg Grosses Gewächs as the wine in which he seeks to convey the site most directly.
  • A white wine from the red slope: Rothenberg belongs to the Roter Hang between Nackenheim and Nierstein. Iron oxides colour the soil red; ‘Rothenberg Riesling GG’ is a dry white. The 2024, at 12% abv, combines yellow fruit, savoury herbs and dense substance that keeps its energy.
Pioneers and renewal

Knewitz

Rheinhessen / Welzbachtal / Appenheim - Hundertgulden

  • A new team on family land: The Knewitz family has made wine in the Welzbachtal since the nineteenth century. Tobias, Björn and Corina have refocused the work on the vineyards of Appenheim and its surroundings; joining the VDP in 2021 accompanies this new stage.
  • From plant material to two plots: The family’s vine nursery allows it to work with its own plant material suited to the sites. Hundertgulden GG is drawn from two south- and south-west-facing plots in the limestone-rich Appenheim vineyard.
  • A powerful, precise Riesling: ‘Hundertgulden GG, Appenheim Riesling’ 2024: dry, with apricot, pineapple, mandarin peel and mint; a silky, powerful palate carried by precise acidity, at 12.5% abv.
New generation and emerging producers

Moritz Kissinger / Kissinger-Bähr

Rheinhessen guide / Uelversheim; wine labelled Rheinischer Landwein

  • It began with three barrels: In 2018, Moritz Kissinger selected grapes from family plots and produced three barrels of Chardonnay. His personal range was thus born within the Uelversheim estate.
  • Chardonnay takes to the heights: His Chardonnay comes from old vines in Tafelstein, a high-lying plot on limestone. The wine moves from barrel to tank and is then bottled without filtration, in pursuit of structure and precision.
  • An energetic Chardonnay: ‘Chardonnay’ 2023 is dry, precise and energetic, with citrus and stone fruit, at 12.5% abv. The bottle is labelled Rheinischer Landwein; the vineyard is geographically in Rheinhessen.
Pioneers and renewal

Sekthaus Raumland

Rheinhessen guide / Flörsheim-Dalsheim - Deutscher Sekt (no automatic PDO attribution)

  • A tasting decides his future: As a student at Geisenheim, Volker Raumland turned a family Müller-Thurgau into Sekt. His bottle won a blind tasting: the experience convinced him to devote his life to sparkling wines.
  • A cuvée named for his daughter: The house has produced traditional-method Sekt since 1984. ‘Cuvée Katharina’, named for his younger daughter, is one of its signatures; the second fermentation and subsequent ageing on lees take place in bottle.
  • Dry bubbles and brioche: ‘Cuvée Katharina Brut Nature’ 2021 combines Pinot Noir and Meunier, with more than thirty-six months on lees and no final dosage. Grapefruit, small berry fruit and brioche precede fine bubbles and a very dry, taut palate.
