A lake and its surrounding wine districts

  • The broad region: Balaton groups six wine districts with different northern, southern, western and inland settings. The lake helps locate them, but the broad region is not one protected designation, one continuous vineyard or one soil type.

Two white grapes to recognise

  • Olaszrizling: Olaszrizling wines range from fresh and dry to more textured styles.
  • Kéknyelű: Kéknyelű is a distinctive white variety. The shared beginning of its name with Kékfrankos does not mean they are the same grape.

How the six districts fit around the lake

  • Northern side: Badacsony, Balatonfüred-Csopak and Balaton-felvidék are separate districts along and above the north shore.
  • Southern side: Balatonboglár occupies the southern side and makes white, red, rosé and sparkling wines.
  • West and inland: Zala extends west of the lake. Somló stands separately inland and has its own guide. These six names describe the broad region’s districts, rather than six identical protected designations.
