Further study

A volcanic hill and its white wines

  • Place and ground: Basaltic rock and weathered volcanic material occur alongside loess, sand and clay. Soil names alone cannot explain a wine’s flavour.
  • Grapes and style: Furmint, Hárslevelű and Olaszrizling join Juhfark in the traditional white-grape set. Site, ripeness and cellar work change the wines’ body and texture.

The district and older labels

  • Beyond Somló Hill: The wider district also includes Ság-hegy and Kis-Somlyó. Somló belongs to the broad Balaton wine region as a distinct inland district, rather than a name for its lakeshore vineyards.
  • Somló and Nagy-Somló: Somló is the protected name used from the 2024 harvest. Nagy-Somló was discontinued for grapes harvested after 1 August 2024, so earlier bottles may legitimately carry that older name.
