Place & climate

  • Between mountains and sea: Molise is a small region south of Abruzzo, with an Adriatic coast and an inland Apennine landscape.
  • Two settings: Coastal influence and warm summers contrast with cooler, higher inland sites; elevation and exposure matter.
  • Soils & relief: Hills and river valleys have varied soils, including clay and limestone settings; the region is not one uniform coastal plain.

Tintilia del Molise DOC

  • Local red grape: Tintilia is the distinctive local black-grape reference behind this DOC.
  • Style tendency: Dry reds often show dark fruit, spice and noticeable structure; individual winemaking and maturity affect the result.
  • Read the origin: Tintilia is a grape; Tintilia del Molise is a protected wine name. Do not treat it as a synonym for Montepulciano.
  • Other forms: Rosato and red Riserva are also permitted; the principal red reference does not describe every bottle.

Biferno DOC

  • Campobasso province: A principal regional origin in the eastern part of Molise.
  • Red & rosato: Montepulciano with Aglianico provides the key grape pairing.
  • White: Trebbiano Toscano is the principal white-grape reference; colour and blend must be read together.

Read the label

  • Four DOCs, no DOCGs: Biferno, Molise / del Molise, Pentro di Isernia / Pentro and Tintilia del Molise are the four DOCs; no DOCG is currently listed.
  • Alternative names: Molise/del Molise and Pentro di Isernia/Pentro are alternative names, not extra appellations.
  • At the table: Serve with roast lamb, grilled pork or a slow-cooked beef ragù; savoury meat and sauce give the tannins a substantial match.

At the table

  • Montepulciano: Serve with roast lamb, grilled pork or a slow-cooked beef ragù; savoury meat and sauce give the tannins a substantial match.
  • Trebbiano Toscano: Pour a dry example with grilled fish and herbs; a fuller, textured bottle suits chicken in a light cream sauce.
  • Service: Fresh dry whites: 9–11°C; textured whites: 11–13°C. Structured reds: 16–18°C; decant mature sedimented bottles gently just before service.

History & Storytelling

  • Tintilia appeared under the broader Molise DOC before gaining its own Tintilia del Molise DOC in 2011. The change gave the local black grape a more explicit regional identity on the label.
