Place & climate

  • Location: Northeastern Spain, between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean.
  • Local contrasts: Coastal moderation, inland basins and mountain elevation create different growing conditions.
  • Map scale: Catalonia is an autonomous community. DO Catalunya is also a protected wine name with its own delimited area and rules.

Reference grapes & wines

  • Penedès: Xarel·lo is a key still-white reference; Macabeu and Parellada also matter, particularly in sparkling blends.
  • Priorat & Montsant: Garnatxa and Carinyena are central red references in these separate neighbouring origins.
  • Beyond the main guides: Terra Alta is a useful Garnatxa Blanca reference; Empordà adds a northeastern coastal and inland contrast.

Read the sparkling labels

  • Cava: Its historic heartland is around Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, but its DO includes designated places elsewhere in Spain.
  • Clàssic Penedès: The quality-sparkling identity within DO Penedès, separate from Cava.
  • Which rules?: Read the exact protected origin before applying ageing terms, organic requirements or smaller-origin indications.

At the table

  • Xarel·lo: Pour a dry example with grilled sea bream, lemon and herbs; a fuller version can accompany chicken with a light cream sauce.
  • Garnatxa: Serve with roast lamb, grilled pork or a slow-cooked beef ragù; savoury meat and sauce give the tannins a substantial match.
  • Service: Fresh dry whites: 9–11°C; textured whites: 11–13°C. Structured reds: 16–18°C; decant mature sedimented bottles gently just before service.

History & Storytelling

  • Catalonia’s modern wine map developed through different paths: Penedès’s first regulation was published in 1960, while Montsant became a separate DO in 2001. Administrative unity does not mean one shared appellation history.
