Essential references

Álvaro Palacios

Priorat DOQ

  • A wager on old Garnacha vines: Born into a Rioja wine family, Álvaro Palacios settled in Priorat in 1989, drawn by its old Grenache vines. In Gratallops he joined the growers who would revive this then little-known region.
  • A vineyard beneath the hermitage: Acquired in 1993, the ‘L’Ermita’ vineyard takes its name from the small hermitage overlooking it. This Gratallops hillside, planted with old Garnacha on schist, is recognised as Gran Vinya Classificada, at the top of Priorat’s hierarchy of sites.
  • Priorat from village to village: ‘Les Terrasses Velles Vinyes’ brings together grapes from several villages: this old-vine wine offers a broader expression of Priorat than the single hillside of ‘L’Ermita’.
  • Fruit and silky tannins: ‘Les Terrasses Velles Vinyes’ 2023: a structured red, with ripe fruit and spicy notes, silky tannins and freshness.

Can Ràfols dels Caus

Catalonia - Garraf

  • Returning to the family home: In 1979, Carlos Esteva returned to restore his grandfather’s property in Garraf. He later had a cellar excavated in the rock: sixteen years of construction to allow the small plots to be vinified separately.
  • Bordeaux varieties in Catalonia: Created in the 1980s, the ‘Gran Caus’ range is central to the estate. ‘Gran Caus Negre’ 2022 blends 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot under DO Penedès.
  • A supple, fragrant red: ‘Gran Caus Negre’ 2022 shows a silky texture, black fruit and balsamic notes.

Celler de Capçanes

Montsant DO

  • Mas Donís Negre 2024: Mas Donís is the supple, fruit-led red in Capçanes’ range. Garnacha, Carinyena and international varieties form a blend that changes with the harvest. The 2024 combines cherry, red fruit and spice, medium body, ripe tannins and a fresh finish.
  • A cooperative and its kosher cuvée: In 1995, Barcelona’s Jewish community asked Capçanes to make a wine under Jewish religious rules and rabbinical supervision. Flor de Primavera became one of the Montsant cooperative’s signatures, alongside its other wines.
Essential references

Celler Masroig

Catalonia - Montsant

  • A village united since 1917: The Celler Masroig cooperative has carried on the work of the village’s growers since 1917. Carignan, the historic grape of these lands, remains at the heart of its wines.
  • Two old vineyards for one wine: ‘Masroig’ 2018 is made entirely from Carignan from the Els Romeus and Mas d’en Nadal sites. This old-vine selection gives a precise expression of the collective heritage in DO Montsant.
  • Carignan with character: ‘Masroig’ 2018 offers a powerful palate, with notes of jam, chocolate and leather.

Clos Mogador

Catalonia - Priorat

  • Clos Mogador 2022: Grenache and Carignan lead the blend, complemented by Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Dark berries, flowers and spice accompany dense substance and still-young tannins in the 2022.
  • Gratallops and the 1989 revival: René Barbier was one of the five growers behind Priorat’s modern revival around Gratallops. The first Clos Mogador vintage, in 1989, was part of that venture.
  • Mogador, a family name from literature: Novelist Élisabeth Barbier had given the name Mogador to the family’s Provençal estate, Le Martinet, in her work. René carried it to Catalonia, preserving the memory of the family’s French roots.
Essential references

Familia Torres

Penedès DO

  • Mas La Plana: a Penedès Cabernet: The first vintage of Mas La Plana, 1970, won its category at the Paris Wine Olympics in 1979. The Cabernet Sauvignon became one of Familia Torres’s signature reds and helped establish its international reputation.
  • Gentle extraction in 2019: For Mas La Plana 2019, parcels were vinified separately in stainless steel or wooden vats, with gentle extraction. Eighteen months in French oak barrels and large wooden foudres followed. The family describes the approach as a way to retain the natural freshness of the variety and vintage.
  • Mas La Plana 2019: Blackberries, flowers, clove and mace accompany a dense but supple, warm palate, extended by a fresh finish.
Historic estates and founders

Gramona

Corpinnat, a collective trademark; not a DO

  • A wine passed down through the family: Created by Gramona’s third generation, ‘Imperial’ makes long cellar ageing a family signature. The 2019 spent more than fifty months on the lees, in contact with the yeast deposited after fermentation.
  • Families around the vines: The grapes for ‘Imperial’ come from the family vineyards and Aliances per la Terra, a collective of winegrowing families led by Gramona since 2015. The house is also one of the founders of Corpinnat, a collective trademark for sparkling wines from Penedès.
  • Creamy bubbles, a lively finish: ‘Gramona Imperial Brut’ 2019: ripe white fruit, citrus and pastry; a creamy palate, fine bubbles and lively freshness.

Raimat

Costers del Segre DO

  • Abadia: Cabernet and Tempranillo from Lleida: Created in 1978, Abadia combines Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo in Costers del Segre. Its name and story draw inspiration from the work of monks. Raimat Abadia Tinto Ecológico offers ripe black fruit, plum, spice and dark chocolate, with a structured, fine and persistent palate.
  • Building Raimat from 1914: Manuel Raventós bought 3,200 hectares at Raimat in 1914 and left the running of Codorníu to his children so he could develop the estate. Transforming the land included constructing an extensive irrigation network.

Raventós i Blanc

Catalonia

  • Leaving Cava to name its place: In 2012, Raventós i Blanc left DO Cava to champion the origin Conca del Riu Anoia, the Anoia basin where the estate is located. This geographical name claimed by the house, without being a protected appellation, accompanies its sparkling wines made from local varieties.
  • The rosé imagined by Pepe: After the 2006 harvest, Pepe Raventós created ‘De Nit’, inspired by Billecart-Salmon’s rosé. The 2024 combines Xarel·lo, Macabeu, Parellada and 10% Sumoll, then spends at least eighteen months on the lees before release as Extra Brut.
  • A fine, creamy rosé: ‘De Nit’ 2024: redcurrant, red apple and citrus; a creamy mousse and a finish marked by a hint of grapefruit.

Recaredo

Penedès · Corpinnat

  • Ageing under cork since 1955: As metal crown caps became widespread, the Mata family kept cork for bottle ageing in 1955. Recaredo removes the deposit by hand at cellar temperature, a process known as manual disgorgement.
  • Terrers Brut Nature 2021: Terrers 2021 spends at least fifty months under cork before disgorgement. No sugar is added afterwards: it is a brut nature. Roasted and confectionery notes accompany a full, creamy palate, very fine integrated bubbles, freshness and a persistent finish.
