Place & climate

  • Position: North of the Ebro in southern Álava, in the Basque Country, below the Sierra de Cantabria.
  • Climate: Atlantic influence and mountain shelter combine; south-facing exposures aid ripening.
  • Soils & relief: Clay-limestone predominates, often in small plots and terraces.

Useful village distinctions

  • Laguardia: A key Rioja Alavesa town with vineyard slopes below the Sierra de Cantabria.
  • Elciego: Another important Alavesa wine village, surrounded by vineyards.
  • Labastida: A Rioja Alavesa reference between Mount Toloño and the Ebro; mountain slopes and river-side settings give different exposures.

Grapes & style

  • Tempranillo: The principal red-grape reference in this northern zone.
  • Young wines: Carbonic-maceration reds are an important style association, alongside barrel-aged wines.
  • Compare: A young, fruit-led wine and a mature red from the same zone can offer very different experiences.

Label & table

  • Origin: This is a geographical zone within Rioja DOCa, not a separate appellation or a cru rank.
  • Read the name: The zone and any Crianza, Reserva or Gran Reserva term describe different aspects of the bottle.
  • At the table: Offer a fruit-led red with grilled pork, or a mature Rioja with roast lamb and mushroom jus. The dish’s weight determines which bottle to recommend.

  • Red Rioja: Offer a fruit-led red with grilled pork, or a mature Rioja with roast lamb and mushroom jus. The dish’s weight determines which bottle to recommend.
  • Service: Structured reds: 16–18°C; decant mature sedimented bottles gently just before service.
