Place & climate

  • Three meanings: Valencia can mean a city, province or the wider Valencian Community; this guide covers the community for orientation.
  • Coast and uplands: Coastal Mediterranean moderation contrasts with stronger continental influences in elevated inland vineyards.
  • Wine origins: Valencia, Utiel-Requena and Alicante are separate protected wine origins.

Grape and style anchors

  • Bobal: The defining red reference of Utiel-Requena, used for reds and rosés.
  • Monastrell: A principal Alicante red reference, also known as Mourvèdre.
  • Whites: Moscatel de Alejandría matters in Alicante; Tardana is a local Utiel-Requena reference. Confirm sweetness.

At the table

  • Bobal: Serve with roast lamb, grilled pork or a slow-cooked beef ragù; savoury meat and sauce give the tannins a substantial match.
  • Service: Structured reds: 16–18°C; decant mature sedimented bottles gently just before service.

History & Storytelling

  • By the late fifteenth century, wines known as Alacant were traded to France, Flanders and England. Alicante’s port connected a local wine identity with markets across northern Europe.
