Barbera
A Piedmont red variety that can combine vivid acidity with deep colour and relatively modest tannin. Its range extends from juicy everyday wines to concentrated, barrel-aged expressions.
Aromatic palette
sour cherry · red plum · blackberry · violet · spice · vanilla when oak contributes

What could you confuse it with?
Sangiovese and young Tempranillo can overlap. A high-acid, dark-coloured wine with modest tannin supports Barbera, but does not establish it.
Origins & family
Origin
Piedmont, northern Italy.
In the vineyard
Vigorous and potentially high yielding, so crop balance matters. Susceptibility to grey and sour rot makes harvest conditions important; adequate support is needed for long shoots.
Growing season
Relatively late ripening; managing vigour and crop size supports concentration.
Vineyard sensitivities
Grey rot and sour rot are important vulnerabilities.
Site & soils
Dry, relatively low-fertility clay-limestone sites help manage its naturally vigorous, productive growth.

Winemaking & development
Tank or neutral vessels emphasise fruit and freshness; smaller oak barrels add texture and spice. High acidity can persist even when the wine is ripe and full-bodied.
Service & ageing
14–16°C for youthful styles, 16–18°C for concentrated oak-aged wines. Avoid serving so cold that acidity overwhelms the fruit.
Pairing logic
Tomato sauces, sausage, roast pork, mushrooms and richer pasta dishes suit the acidity. Concentrated examples can support braised meat.
